House Update: Hallway

So last July, I made the move to Baltimore to join my boyfriend and start a new job. We moved into a great, old townhouse in a young neighborhood with our two lovely roommates. We have the whole top floor to ourselves which is a big studio-like bedroom and bathroom that is bright and really works well for us. While we've definitely made some progress since we first moved in, I have a lot of ideas to really make it feel like home! I'll start with the hallway, if you'd like to see...

This is the first thing you see once you walk upstairs. There is a long hallway leading into the main room with two closets on the right, an opening to the bathroom on the left, and a vanity nook. Here is another view looking toward the stairs:

It was painted yellow before, which is my least favorite color. This is what it looks like right now:

Excuse the cord :) It's all been painted white: Simply White by Benjamin Mohr, to be exact. The nook on the right is my vanity, and the second entry (you can see a sliver of the white and green tile) is the entrance to the bathroom.

First things first... the hallway is getting a rug! The hardwood is beat up and I'm pretty tired of getting splinters in my socks every morning, so this is a big priority. The ideal option would be an oriental (in pinks and blues.. or maybe orange and blues? or black??) that has yet to be found, but I'm searching obsessively. I'd love something like this:

But in the interest of budget, and the fact that we may not be in this house for too long, I'm leaning toward buying two of these stripe-y guys from West Elm:

I'm also going to make another set of curtains (short ones!) for the window wall on the far end of the hallway:

I'm thinking white with a fun trim? Or maybe a color depending on the rug. They will only be long enough to hit the ledge, but I think it will add a lot to that wall. Here are some trim ideas I like:

My favorite part of the hallway is the vanity nook. Little nooks like these are fun because you can make a big impact without spending tons of money. This is what it looked like before we moved in:

And currently:

It's white and bright now, which is great, but it still has a ways to go. You can see in the before pictures that the baseboards were a pretty gross pink/skin color, so the baseboards were all painted using BM's Chantilly Lace in high gloss. I used the same color to paint the wood front of the vanity, which made a big difference [to me!]. I immediately propped up a black mirror in here that I already had, but I'm thinking I might swap it out with a gold mirror, and I definitely want to mount it to the wall. I might hang some pictures that are currently sitting in my closet, or I've also been thinking about doing a fun wallpaper or painting something crazy like a mural of flowers (inspired by Anne's beautiful designs, from Rifle Paper Co):

Wouldn't that be fun?
PS did you hear that she is releasing a line of wallpaper in 2014? I am verrry excited.

I also need a major update to my vanity bench situation. My first thought was to makeover my antique tables into that mongolian fur situation on the right:

which is actually quite easy to do! But I also found a few brass stools on etsy that look a lot like this guy:

and I'm thinking that might be a fun option as well. We'll see.

That's all for the hallway update. What do you think? I'll be writing soon about the bathroom plans, so stay tuned.

Thanks for reading!
